When large pieces of conductors are placed in changing magnetic flux, small circulating currents are induced in them. These currents are called eddy currents because they swirl around in the conductor like eddies in water.

Disadvantages:

Dissipate electrical energy in the form of heat. Overheating of metallic cores of transformers, electric motors and other such devices. In order to avoid the overheating of the core, metallic sheets are taken in the form of very thin sheets. These sheets are electrically insulated. The cores are insulated with some insulating material as a result heat won’t get transferred to surroundings. These cores are known as laminated cores. By using these cores eddy currents are reduced as a result heat dissipation is reduced.

Applications:

  • Induction furnace
  • Electromagnetic damping
  • Electric brakes
  • Speedometers
  • Induction motor
  • Electromagnetic shielding
  • Inductothermy
  • Energy meters
